Busy October at the Danish MultiActor Platform

Farmers, advisors and professors from the Roskilde University have been sharing their knowledge on intercropping at several appointments.

The 10th of October 15 satellite farmers of the Danish Multiactor Platform met at the 800 ha farm of one of them.

The day contained:

  • walks around the fields and farms
  • discussions
  • exchange on new experiences and learnings from 2019, especially catch crop species mixtures

The discussions included technical issues on machinery for establishment – during growth of the main crop, undersowing/relay intercropping, or after harvest.

The group also identified and discussed  difficulties on their individual farms,  including ambitions for the following season and receiving feedback and advices from their peer group members.

Some of the farmers will grow pea-barley species mixtures in the coming spring fueling interesting discussions on relevance for more local grain sorting facilities to improve selling opportunities and avoid cleaning expenses required by major grain trader companies.

Later in the month, on the 24th, Henrik Hauggaard-Nielsen and Ane Kirstine Aare from Roskilde University represented ReMIX at a farmer conference organized by the Danish advisory service, Agrovi. Around 150 participants mostly farmers from Denmark, as well as a few from Norway and Sweden were participating.

There were good discussions on possibilities and barriers for use of intercropping in relation to eg. optimal use of growth potential in the Danish season, selling to retailers and needs for knowledge exchange.
